Educated Latina Series Part 2: Prove your worth.

Part II: Prove your worth

As an #educatedlatina and having to navigate through 12 years of schooling and training. I've had to prove my worth because I know I was underestimated.

Underestimated at math competitions for being that Mexican girl.

Underestimated in medicine for looking too young.

Underestimated in general because I am a minority woman.

I am not a cosmetologist.

I am not a young mom who barely finished high school.

And even though my husband is a physician, I am not his stay at home wife.

I am a proud Latina physician and so much more.

Being underestimated is actually powerful. #ponderosa

The power that being underestimated has given me is the chance or opportunity to prove them wrong.

Surprise them or give them something they didn't expect.

So these are the rules I follow to continue to be prove my worth.

1. Be confident. I was voted to be the chief resident in the largest OB/GYN residency program in the country along with two of my other amazing classmates in final year in residency. To me that alone says a lot about the confidence I have in my skills and what I can bring to the table. Training is a scary time and I don't think I was always confident in everything I did, but it is a vibe you give off and that's all that matters.

2. Don't worry about what they might think or say. It's your life and your dreams. Some may say, why do you do this blog thing? What's in it for you? I say, do you and the rest will fall into place. Women are constantly worrying about what others think or say about them. Shake those haters off ladies, only you have to look at yourself in the mirror at night.

3. Be the Bigger Person. Always. Don’t argue with them. But, instead politely agree to disagree. Allow the person to know you hear their opinions, but you have decided to live the life you want not what they want.

4. Be your best self. I know life can throw things your way that may not make you positive 100% of the time but try. When you are positive, it does something for the mind, body and spirit.

So ladies, #proveyourworth. You might have to do it on the daily, but hey that makes it fun.

Let it fuel your fire, because mujer you #areonfire. I promise. And no one can take that away.

Mujer is beautiful.

The future is mujer.

Love, Dr. E

This is part two of three of my series to help educated Latinas realize that our journey is never easy, but with inspiring each other and hearing each others stories we can empower other Latinas just like us.
